A brand-new reading series is underway!

Starting in 2021, the Ample Hills Creamery opened its upstairs to a special Rooftop Reading series curated by Randee Dawn, featuring a variety of emerging and established writers reading from their current works. Each month will feature different authors of different genres — science-fiction, fantasy, horror, young adult, mystery, humor … the sky’s the limit!

And bonus: There’s ice cream involved!

Here are the details:

When?

Readings will be held from 7-9pm on the third Tuesday of each month.

Note: Readings are for all ages, but unless labeled as Young Adult/Middle Grade/Children’s may feature adult content, including themes and language.

Where?

Ample Hills Creamery Gowanus
305 Nevins Street (between Nevins and 3rd Avenue), Upstairs
Located 2 blocks from the R train (Union St.)

Cost?

Tickets for attendees are $10, available via the Ample Hills website (click to choose your date and purchase). Due to pandemic restrictions, only 55 tickets will be available for each reading. You can buy your ticket on the website, or take your chances and purchase it as a walk-up on the night.

Every ticket holder will receive a complimentary regular-sized ice cream of their choice to go with their sweet evening of reading. (Yes, there are vegan/non-dairy options!) All ice cream may be taken into the readings. Food is allowed if it isn’t disruptive (leave that hot plate at home!)

Authors will also be selling/signing copies of their works, if they choose.

Note: Bring proof of vaccination. While it may not be required while readings are held on the rooftop (outdoors), if weather requires holding the event inside you will need to prove proof of vaccinated status. Masks are also encouraged.

What Is Ample Hills?

An ice cream shop, Ample Hills has literary origins: “I too lived – Brooklyn, of ample hills, was mine,” wrote Walt Whitman in Crossing Brooklyn Ferry. The shop’s founders wanted to open a place that would bring the community together, and ice cream was precisely the way to do it. They use farm fresh ingredients, are a registered dairy plant, pasteurize (and make most of their mix-ins) on site, and have been called “Brooklyn’s freshest.”

I’m a Reader. How Can I Get on the Schedule?

We are currently looking authors who have recently had books or stories published, or will have books or stories published in the upcoming months. We are also actively seeking established featured writers to read at each event.

Let us know which you fit in best so we can slot you in appropriately: science-fiction, fantasy, horror or mystery, or other (let us know which).

If you are interested in reading, please email curator Randee Dawn via the form here (taking readers for 2022 now!) to let us know when you can attend, along with your bona fides.

Follow us for updates on Twitter!

See you there, you sweet things!
