Random notes

Random bits of thought because I don't have the wherewithal to put together something coherent:

– the trial of the century is over. Well, for me. Suffice it to say that the guy got the money he wanted. More here.
– there's a "House" marathon on this Sunday, which means all is right with the world
– and, Hugh Laurie is hosting "Saturday Night Live," which might, just might, precipitate my taping the show and watching it for the first time in about 10 years
– not coincidentally, there's some kind of major windstorm coming through our area at any time, and I have to wonder if we'll lose power
– I am feeling highly productive, as I've managed to wash the curtains and the runner rug and it's not even Saturday. (The whole place has to be cleaned up for a Very Special Guest next weekend.)
– the mosquito who had been inhabiting my room (and making sleeping in it very problematic) appears to have decamped or died or both
– Andy Taylor has decamped (not died) from Duran Duran, for a second time, which is fine since he always seemed like he was in some other band
– went to see "Volver" on Thursday night and was astounded by the originality and the fact that Penelope Cruz was not only not annoying, but very moving despite her distracting beauty

You know, you’re going to have to help me with the Hugh Laurie thing.

Here’s the deal…in interviews, he seems like a real decent sort.

But that dreadful show in which he acts…I hate his character.

    I love his character.

    I hate his character.

Whatever…so, I just can’t bear to watch it.

Besides…24 is so far superior why bother. 🙂

See, I think “House” would be quite conventional without Hugh Laurie’s reading of the character. I rather like a curmudgeon who refuses to let people get away with their delusions and inability to deal with reality. His basic precept — all patients lie — is pretty well borne out by the people he’s faced with every day.

That said, if he were a real person I’d probably not be a fan. If he were my doctor, I’d probably really dislike him, but come to trust his judgment (particularly if he cured me of plague). What makes him perfect is that he’s a rarely-seen sort of TV archetype, and Laurie has really given three-dimensions to a not-so-nice, but brilliant individual. Plus, he does a great American accent.

“24” is a good show, but I just can’t find the time to commit to any of those long-arc programs! In my dottering old age I’ll probably get Netflix to send me all the seasons at once. As it is, I barely have enough room for “Law & Order,” “Deadwood” and “The Sopranos.” And, of course “House,” which I’ve managed to miss every episode for this season.

Dammit!  I didn’t know Hugh Laurie was hosting SNL.  I totally would have watched it.  I’m a huge House fan, too.

And, have you read his book?  I just started re-reading it.
