Not All Shapeshifters Howl at the Moon

It’s the night of the full moon and you thought werewolves were bad enough. Now you have to worry about what else might be stalking you through the streets! Were-bees? Were-llamas? Were-siphonophores? Even the ocean isn’t safe! In WERE-2, the latest anthology from Zombies Need Brains, we return to the back alleys (and oceans) in the dead of night to discover what other were-creatures might see you as prey. Not until you hear that rustle of feathers next to your ear, or smell the brine of the sea on that moonlit walk, will you realize that you’re the one they’re hunting.

Join fifteen authors as they explore what made your stairs creak, including Steven Harper, Joe Attard, Auston Habershaw, Elena Pavlova, Joshua Palmatier, Rebecca Snow, Gini Koch, Esther Friesner, Harry Turtledove, Gail Z. Martin, Jean Marie Ward, Blake Jessop, Randee Dawn, Evan Simon-Leack, and Joel C. Scoberg. Bolt your locks and latch those windows tight, because you never know what’s actually scratching at your door.

Remember Emma the werepanther from Tune in Tomorrow? Well, I've created a back story for her -- and now she's (more correctly) a wif-panther than a were-panther! Plus, she's much younger and struggling to find meaning at a dating agency for shifters called Some 'Were' Out There!

Return to the fae entertainment world begun in Tune in Tomorrow and continued in We Interrupt This Program and enjoy what it means to be a wif-panther in a world of terrible, "alpha" wolves. Pre-order now!

Coral tapped her sharpened nails against one another and gave her a look Emma was well-acquainted with. Her now-boss had deployed it when they’d first met at Yowl U, paired as surprise roommates. Turned out that dogs and cats could live together without mass hysteria breaking out—but Coral put the “bitch” in Bichon-Frisé, the creature she would Shift into in another week. No passive-aggressive comment was too tiny to lob Emma’s way. Yet neither had moved out. Emma saw her as a scratching post, someone who would prepare her for the real world. Coral saw Emma as a project. And they’d both benefitted, strangely.

“How very you, Emma,” Coral said. She pushed a light pink folder across her desk. “Naturally, I had noticed the flaws in our system; I merely wanted to see if you could catch them. We have a decent attrition rate for clients, and an abysmal record of long-term mating situations. Our bottom line is suffering. Therefore, I have elevated you from assistant to Junior Recruiter-in-Training.” She held up a handpaw. “Yes, there will be a salary nudge after the ‘in training’ wheels
come off.”

This was a very Coral sort of good news, one that came with enough strings to distract any wif-feline. But there was an issue. “You’d said I wouldn’t have to, um, get in the weeds if I worked here,” said Emma. “I like being behind the desk. I don’t socialize well with other Shifters. Anyway, I just finally memorized our slogan.” She closed her eyes and recited the words she had to use whenever she picked up the work phone: “Fur, feathers, scales or skin—find your mate, not
just a date! Some Were Out There Mating Service has the Shifter to make your heart lift-er!”

“Well done. But change is good for a person—and a wif,” said Coral. “Besides, I can’t have an employee at a company devoted to Shifter matching who knows virtually nothing of the dating world herself!”

Emma folded her arms. That was a low blow....
